The MacBook That Windows Laptops Still Can’t Surpass
Windows laptops have made significant strides this year. The introduction of Snapdragon X chips in the Copilot+ PC lineup has positioned them as strong contenders against the MacBook Air, while the powerful AMD Ryzen 300 AI chips have brought impressive devices like the Zenbook S 16 into the mix, challenging even the MacBook Pro.
These advancements have solidified Windows laptops as more than just viable alternatives to MacBooks—they’re now some of the top choices in the market.
However, there’s one MacBook that remains out of reach for this new generation of Windows laptops. Surprisingly, it’s not a brand-new model—it’s the two-year-old M2 MacBook Air.
Despite its age, the 13-inch M2 MacBook Air continues to be a highly appealing device. Priced at $999 for the base model with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, it might not seem overly impressive at first glance. In comparison, the Surface Laptop 7th Edition also starts at $999 but offers twice the memory.
But here’s the catch—you can currently snag the same 13-inch M2 MacBook Air for as low as $799. Retailers like Best Buy and Amazon are offering this discount, making it an attractive deal. That $200 savings is substantial—it’s equivalent to the cost of doubling your RAM through Apple. Meanwhile, all laptops in the Copilot+ PC lineup require a minimum of 16GB of RAM, leaving no options under $999.
At this price point, every dollar counts, and the $200 difference is significant.
Yes, the M2 MacBook Air is an older model, but its design and features are virtually identical to the M3 version released earlier this year. While the M3 offers better GPU performance, the difference is negligible unless you’re gaming.
If you’re looking for an even more budget-friendly option, the M1 MacBook Air is now available for just $649. However, I’d recommend sticking with the M2 model for its superior display, webcam, speakers, and port selection. The extra $150 is well worth it.
In fact, the M2 MacBook Air’s affordability even makes it tough to justify buying a Chromebook these days.
While I’m hopeful that Copilot+ PCs will eventually come down in price, with Qualcomm hinting at cheaper Snapdragon X PCs next year, Apple still holds a significant advantage in the sub-$1,000 laptop market.
For now, there’s simply no better laptop under $1,000 than the M2 MacBook Air.
