Tesla Issues Belated Warning Against Dangerous Charging Hack
Tesla car enthusiasts often share various hacks and shortcuts to optimize their vehicle experience, but not all of them are safe or effective. One such method, known as the "wet towel" trick, has recently prompted Tesla's Charging department—what's left of it—to issue a public warning to customers to cease this practice immediately.
The "wet towel" trick involves wrapping a damp, cool cloth around a Supercharger cable handle in an attempt to speed up charging. The rationale behind this hack is that the Supercharger has temperature sensors designed to prevent overheating during the charging process. Some Tesla owners believe that cooling the charging handle will trick the sensor into allowing faster charging.
However, Tesla has pointed out a significant flaw in this logic. If the sensor in the charging handle reads a cooler temperature than the actual conditions, the result could be a dangerous "risk of overheating or damage," according to the company.
While this might seem like an obvious hazard, it took Tesla over two months to address the issue publicly. The warning came on Wednesday via the official Tesla Charging account on X, in response to an article from InsideEVs.com that highlighted the risks of this dangerous hack. The "wet towel" trick had already gained traction on various auto news websites and Reddit forums.
This delay in communication is a symptom of a larger issue within Tesla. The company dissolved its entire public relations department in 2020, and Elon Musk has openly refused to reestablish it. Musk declared on his X account that he didn't want to "spend money on advertising & manipulating public opinion," as reported by Electrek.
The lack of a dedicated PR team has led to significant communication gaps, as illustrated by the delayed response to the "wet towel" trick. For Tesla owners, it's a reminder that not all hacks are worth the risk, and official guidance should always be sought for vehicle maintenance and safety.
