When Ashley Storino wants advice on a new pair of black boots or the latest book recommendations, she skips Google altogether. For this 22-year-old digital marketer, blue links are a thing of the past. Instead, she turns to TikTok, scrolling through videos for quick insights and checking comments for authenticity before heading to Google for confirmation.

“In the past, I'd search for things like the best mascara on Google and find top 10 lists influenced by brands,” Storino explained. “Now, TikTok offers real people's honest reviews, making it more relatable and trustworthy.”

The Rise of TikTok Search An increasing number of young users are using TikTok beyond dance challenges, making it their go-to for restaurant suggestions, weekend plans, and fashion updates. They rely on TikTok not just for entertainment but also for queries once reserved for Google, such as health advice and skincare routines.

“Consumers prefer TikTok for its authenticity,” said Jenna Drenten, a marketing professor at Loyola University Chicago. “Google feels overwhelming with content overload.”

Google acknowledges TikTok's rising popularity as a search platform, especially among the 18 to 24 age group. However, Google's dominance with over 90% market share remains unchallenged, offering quick access to news and directions that TikTok doesn't provide.

The Appeal of Visual and Authentic Content Natalie Pennington, a communication professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, sees a generational shift in how young adults consume information. TikTok's bite-sized videos offer quick insights, making it easier to digest than traditional search engines.

“It's very visual,” Pennington noted, highlighting TikTok's interactive features that allow users to engage with creators directly.

Karishma Jashani, a content creator in Singapore, exemplifies this shift, relying on TikTok for most queries except essential ones like maps or news. “It's faster and more efficient,” Jashani stated, emphasizing TikTok's immediacy compared to Google's text-heavy results.

Navigating Trust and Misinformation Despite TikTok's appeal, concerns about misinformation persist. Yini Zhang from the State University of New York at Buffalo warns of the platform's algorithm-driven content, which can inadvertently spread false claims.

While Google has established criteria for trusted sources, such as .edu or .gov websites, social media lacks similar standards. NewsGuard's study found significant misinformation on TikTok, raising questions about the platform's reliability.

The Future of Search As TikTok continues to evolve into a multifaceted platform, its role in information dissemination will likely grow. However, balancing the allure of user-generated content with the need for accuracy remains a challenge, prompting users to exercise caution when sourcing information from social media.
