Intel is getting another high NA tool from ASML, CEO says

CEO Pat Gelsinger said Intel is on track to receive ASML’s second “high NA” EUV tool, worth €350 million ($383 million), according to the company’s Aug. 1 earnings call notes.

In December, Intel began receiving its first large machine, which took months to install and is expected to help it make new, more powerful computer chips.

“The second high NA tool is coming to our Oregon plant,” Gelsinger said during the call, adding that the company’s technology investments are “showing good early signs.”

The remarks were not met with a sharp decline in Intel’s performance, amid concerns about the company’s recovery prospects.

ASML, the largest supplier of equipment to computer chipmakers, declined to comment on the purchases from specific customers.

ASML’s top executive said on July 17 that the company had started shipping its second high NA tool to an unnamed customer and would record revenue for the first and possibly second this year.

The successful launch of High NA is key to ASML’s future as Europe’s largest technology company, but questions remain about when customers will adopt the tool.

The company has received orders for more than a dozen High NA machines from leading chipmakers TSMC, Samsung, Intel, and memory chip specialists SK Hynix and Micron.

Intel plans to start commercial production of the technology by 2027. TSMC, which makes chips for Nvidia and Apple, will receive the tools this year, but did not specify when they will be put into production.

ASML CEO Christophe Fouquet said on July 17 that DRAM memory chipmakers, meaning Samsung, SK Hynix or Micron, could start using High NA in 2025 or 2026.
