Eritrea Suspends Ethiopian Airlines Flights

Eritrean authorities have halted all Ethiopian Airlines flights to the country starting September 30, the airline announced on Wednesday.

Ethiopian Airlines had resumed flights to Eritrea in 2018 after a 20-year hiatus, following a peace agreement between the two nations. This accord earned Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019.

In a statement posted on its official Facebook page, Ethiopian Airlines revealed, "We have received a notice from the Eritrean Civil Aviation Authority indicating the suspension of all Ethiopian Airlines flights to Eritrea, effective September 30, 2024."

The airline also noted that the reasons for this suspension have not been disclosed.

Eritrea's Information Minister Yemane Gebremeskel has not yet responded to requests for comment.

Hanna Atnafu, a spokesperson for Ethiopian Airlines, expressed surprise at the suspension. "What is shocking and saddening to our airline is that just 15 days ago, on July 8, we received a letter requesting an increase in our weekly flight frequency from 10 to 15," Hanna told Reuters.

Ethiopian Airlines, a state-owned enterprise, is recognized as Africa's largest airline by revenue and profit according to the International Air Transport Association.
