SparkyLinux Showcases Diverse Desktop Options in Latest Release
The most recent iteration of SparkyLinux, a lightweight Debian-based distribution, presents a compelling range of desktop environments that sets it apart in the Linux landscape.
The 2024.01 release of SparkyLinux, which is part of the rolling-release version 8 based on Debian "Trixie," introduces notable features and improvements. In addition to the rolling-release stream, SparkyLinux offers a stable-release version known as SparkyLinux 7, based on Debian 12 "Bookworm," with version 7.2 released last month.
Having evolved significantly over almost a decade, SparkyLinux now not only boasts two release streams and various special editions but also provides an extensive selection of desktop environments, some of which are not commonly found in other distributions.
The standard desktop offerings include LXQt, MATE, Xfce, and KDE. However, SparkyLinux stands out with two minimal editions: the OpenBox-based Minimal GUI, a 1.5 GB download that installs into 3.5 GB of disk space, and the Minimal CLI, which is half the size. Both editions cater to i686 hardware and offer Arm64 and ArmHF variants for Raspberry Pis.
SparkyLinux goes further with three "Special Editions." The GameOver edition includes over 100 pre-installed FOSS games, along with Steam, WINE, PlayOnLinux, and TeamSpeak. The Multimedia edition provides a broad array of graphics, audio, video, and web-editing tools. The Rescue edition, although not installable, includes an abundance of data and file-recovery tools, backup applications, anti-malware programs, and robust file system support, including HPFS.
Notably, the diverse array of desktop environments available for installation captures attention. SparkyLinux offers Lumina, originating from FreeBSD, alongside some unique "home-roasted" environments, such as JADE, Manokwari, Draco, and the original cross-UNIX environment, CDE.
CDE, which became FOSS in 2012, has been part of the SparkyLinux offerings, with past challenges in functionality. However, the latest release exhibits improved performance, making it a viable option for users interested in exploring the oldest extant desktop on the newest Linux platform. Despite some display glitches in VirtualBox, this iteration of CDE on SparkyLinux presents a convenient and accessible way to experience this classic desktop environment.
